MADIBA'S CHILDREN
I was in my early teens when my family immigrated to South Africa from Ghana. We settled in the old Transkei republic, in a town called Butterworth, which is about an hour's drive from Mandela's hometown of Qunu. Like most South Africans, Mandela's actions radically affected me. Almost any South African will tell you they are where they are today because of Nelson Mandela. Now living abroad, I happened to be back in South Africa on an assignment when the news of Nelson Mandela’s passing broke. During my last day in the country I took to the streets of Pretoria and asked people to transcribe their heartfelt messages about our Madiba in honor of his passing. The result is this series of portraits.
